Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome to Honors English I. I look forward to working with you this semester. Please feel free to contact me at school or by email with any questions or concerns that arise.
I ask that each student have the following items for my class each day:
- One three-ring binder (1” or larger) with dividers
- Composition notebook for daily warm-ups
- Loose leaf paper
- Blue and/or black pens
- No. 2 pencils
- Index cards
If you would be interested in donating to our classroom supplies, we are in need of the following:
- Kleenex
- Old magazines
- Colored copy paper
- Colored Sharpies or fine-tip markers
- Individually wrapped candy for incentives
Our daily classroom procedures and policies are as follows:
- Be present, on time, and prepared for class each day. You are expected to be in your assigned seat and ready to begin class by the tardy bell. If you are not in your assigned seat when the bell rings, you will be considered tardy. Please take care of restroom, fountain, and locker visits prior to class.
- Our class will follow the Middle Creek Student Handbook for standards of behavior, make-up work and attendance. Please refer to that as our model.
- You are given TWO bathroom passes per quarter; these are to be used in case of emergencies only. You will not be given any extra passes unless I have received a doctor’s note concerning this matter. Otherwise, there are no exceptions to this rule.
- Homework is due when the tardy bell rings. Homework turned in after this time will be assessed as late work. Major projects are due on or before the final due date, regardless of absence. Please make arrangements to have your project here early, or send it by someone else or digitally if you should be absent on the due date. Please write down your daily assignments and due dates. They are also located on my class website Google calendar.
- I will only accept and grade written and typed work completed in standard blue ink, black ink, or No. 2 pencil with your first and last name on it as well with standard fonts, margins, and spacing.
- I will accept soft copies of warranted assignments and projects as long as I receive them prior to the time class starts. Please copy yourself on the email and verify that you sent it properly and the work is accessible on our school equipment. Any email you send MUST be sent from your WCPSS student email; I will not acknowledge any other email addresses.
- When you are absent from class, you are responsible for making up your assignments in a timely manner. It is your responsibility to get your assignments, complete them, and turn them in within two days of your absence. Each student is responsible for taking announced quizzes and tests upon return and turning in any announced assignments at that time as well. Please come before or after school to receive any directions/work missed due to absences—I will not use class time to catch students up on work they missed as it detracts from the lesson at hand.
- I do not allow food, drink, candy, or gum in the classroom. Students may have water bottles only (or drinks with caps).
- All school policies are strictly enforced in the classroom as well. Students review the handbook on the first day of school which addresses the policy on electronics, tardies, absences, dress code, etc.
Opportunities - For students needing clarification and assistance, we have several options:
- I am available Tuesday mornings beginning at 6:45 a.m. and during all lunches for tutoring and makeup work or by appointment. It is your responsibility to arrive at this time if you need help or to make up work. The buses disembark by this time.
- MCHS does not authorize extra credit. To take advantage of retesting for major unit tests only, you will need to attend the mandatory remediation session offered one time only after the test is scored as well as the retest session offered one time only regardless of absence or time conflict. I will announce and post the remediation and retest dates and times upon handing back the test scores for those who wish to take advantage of this option. The retest grade will be average with the original test grade, not to reduce the original grade by more than one letter grade.
- Please take advantage of checking grades, attendance, discipline, etc. online. In addition, each teacher sends out progress reports according to the calendar on the school website.
- I will also have assignments and lessons available on my Weebly website-MrsQueenEnglish.weebly.com. This site is particularly helpful when a student is absent from class.
- I will post the information and due dates on Weebly during the semester. Contact/see me immediately with ANY usage concerns prior to the due dates.
BYOD Policy: Students must adhere to BYOD policy. If students are not supposed to be using electronic device, the following protocol will be enforced:
- Verbal warning to put phone/device away
- After two infractions, student will be written up for violation of electronic device policy in the classroom, and parents will be contacted regarding the incident.

How will students be eligible to receive a retest?
- Students may opt for a remediation session to practice and review skills they struggled with on the assessment. The re-test will be a completely different assessment to offer a second chance for the student, targeting a different learning/assessment style.
- Based on teaching a blended class, we will differentiate the remediation and the re-test based on the level and learning style of the individual student.
- Honors students will receive an average of their original and retest scores.
